a girl walks into a bar...
data visualizers, rejoice! the ratio finder app uses foursquare checkins to determine the ratio of guys to girls at different venues in new york city and san francisco. tired of the sausage fest? this might be your solution...
one word of warning: ratios can be deceiving. if the odds are good, the goods might be odd.

canada is curious
i am loving these infographics comparing gay sex to straight sex. the source data comes from the dating site OkCupid, and there are some interesting takeaways...notably, that canada seems real gay.

colorful sound
as an ardent lover of color, i simply adore this type of work. for some reason, i'm also reminded of this video from last year.
it's homecoming season...
...and in honor of his hallowed time of year, i thought i'd repost the horrifying true story of texas' biggest secret: the homecoming mum. enjoy.

i'm very proud of board chairman matt lew who, with the support of deloitte, made this lovely little video about philanthro productions.

do not slander the banana
the new chiquita banana stickers are out. finalists were whittled down using criteria that prohibited any writing that was "obscene, hateful, tortuous, or defamatory" to the banana.
as a staunch defender of the banana as one of nature's greatest fruits, i'm pleased by these strict rules. for non-believers, let me remind you that bananas are mouth-sized, not drippy, and easily identified as ripe or not (in contrast to the orange, the ultimate gamble fruit). structurally, they come with a handle and their own biodegradable wrapper. banana, FTW.

peace is the new frontier
the extremely talented bobby bailey (one third of the original invisible children team) just completed a short film to introduce failing whistles, an inspirational, youth-oriented campaign to bring peace to the congo. falling whistles is the brainchild of another friend, sean carasso, whose passion for this movement is so strong, you can almost smell it in the seams of the knitted cardigan he wears every day. i visited falling whistles' downtown LA headquarters for the first time in august, and the energy of the movement hits you as you walk through the door. sean is probably coming to a city near you on his north american tour this fall. if you want to see how generation Y is going to change the world, check these guys out and then get on board, because they're ushering in the new frontier.

pink meat goop
according to this blog post, the mechanically-separated poultry frosting in the photo below will eventually become a chicken nugget. that is, of course, after it goes through an ammonia bath and is injected with reflavorization additives. yes, i just made up that word, but they made up a food product, so i think i'm justified.
